This is from Jonsrud View Point in Sandy, Oregon. I wanted to get Mt. Hood with the sunrise but the low clouds didn't cooperate. I set up to shoot anyway and all of a sudden the sunlight started pouring in as you can see. In a span of about 5 min., it went from all grey to this and then faded back to grey.
My wife and I enjoyed a short trip to Monterey CA. I found this spot with a waterfall that only appears when a wave hits the rocks.
This gem is on the Oregon Coast at Cape Perpetua. A six hour round-trip for me. It's a popular spot for photographers. To perfect this shot, it's all about the timing. For me it had to be high tide at sunset with decent weather. This was a little bit harrowing. It's a wall of rock on the other side of the well and waves would crash and spray, powerfully. I'm standing on some short rocks but one surge came in and got my feet wet. This was shot with a 45mm PC-E at f16 and 1/3 sec.
My son was married in Seattle last weekend so I took one evening while there to get a cityscape from Kerry Park.
The next morning I went again to see a Seattle sunrise with Mt. Rainier in the background.
Another fun composite! One hundred band members all shot individually and then assembled in post.
These two are big soccer fans so we had to get some shots at Providence Park in Portland where the Timbers and Thorns play. From there we went out to Cathedral Park under the St. Johns bridge in N. Portland.

This is a 3 shot panorama from the top of Rockefeller Center in NYC, looking south. Just to the right of The Empire State Building is the One World Trade Center, and further to the right is the Statue of Liberty. This was my first time to New York and we were treated to a great sunset!

A Friday afternoon wedding is unusual but turned out to be perfect for this couple. The weather, the venue, the bride, were all beautiful and the ceremony was so short, nobody could complain about being in the sun too long. I know they'll have a great life together. Thank you L&D.
Annaka is an actress/model who was referred to me by Kirk Jones for a portfolio shoot. She's worked on the NBC series "Grimm" which is filmed here in Portland, she's worked with the Travel Channel, and modeled for Harley Davidson.
After some brainstorming with David Weaver, we came up with a forested scene involving a bathtub and a Native American look for Annaka. She's often asked to play a Native American because of her Dutch-Indonesian heritage. She also describes herself as "odd" so we juxtaposed the elements. We had a fun time shooting in a wooded area of the Pittock Mansion where Annaka also happens to work. Pay her a visit at the mansion and you'll see her signature pink scooter parked outside.
I hope these photos along with Annaka's natural enthusiasm will open many doors for her.
The latest Sunset High School basketball team photo for their promotional poster. We shot this on the stage in the school's theater.
I recently acquired and installed rails and pantographs in the White Space studio. Pantographs are the accordion-like mechanisms that allow the studio lights to move up and down with ease, and they slide back and forth on rails for easy placement. Another benefit is it gets all those light stands and cords off the floor and out of the way.

I was invited to shoot my friend's band, Chasing Mischief, Sunday evening at the Copper Monkey Sports Bar in Beaverton. I was impressed with their 7 member production and they sounded great! The venue lacked a real stage or stage lighting so I had to set up speed lights high around the band to simulate stage lighting.

Coolade is a talented band from Seattle who recently hired me to do promotional shots, band shots and live performance photography. They were a lot of fun to work with and sounded great in concert. Playing hits from the last several decades, the crowd loves them and I'm a fan now too.
Yesterday's wedding of Nicole and Alin took place on a beautiful summer day at a great venue called "The Aerie at Eagle Landing". Their morning wedding was a pleasure to shoot and the venue offered some nice backdrops for our creative photos. Enjoy your new life together, Nicole and Alin!

We had a great, sunny evening for Nicole and Alin's engagement session at Fort Vancouver. We had fun with the shoot and these two make a great couple. I'm looking forward to their wedding!
80's Dance Attack with VJ Kittyrox just celebrated it's 8th year and is still going strong! My favorite part of shooting this show is capturing the character of the crowd. There's always interesting people who get so into the music and know the videos so well that they actually perform more than just dance. Very fun!

Ella came to me, via her grandparents, in November to do a photo shoot as a Christmas gift for her parents. She was a complete natural in front of the camera and we came away with a lot of great shots. Her gift turned into a large canvas wall print of one of her portraits, and a small printed album containing the rest of the shoot. A successful surprise on Christmas morning.

Last year, my friend Jeff was talking about finally getting his new car, a 2012 Ford Mustang Boss. I'm not much of a car guy but it sounded so cool I immediately thought, we need to do a photo shoot with it. He was all in for the idea but after too many months of trying to work around schedules and weather, I finally picked a spot where weather wouldn't matter and started finalizing the shoot. I knew I wanted the most-excellent Becky to be the model for this shoot and that was just another hurdle to overcome. Thankfully her schedule changed at the last minute. It finally came together on a chilly morning last month with the help of photographer and friend David Weaver and I'm very happy with the results.

I'm 2 months behind in my blog posts so I'll be catching up here within a short time. Starting with October, I was asked to photograph the 80's Dance Attack Halloween show in the Crystal Ballroom. These shows are always fun to be a part of and even more so with people in crazy and creative Halloween costumes. They also asked me to photograph their setup process before the show. Besides stills, I setup a time-lapse compacting 3.5 hours into a minute.
I recently had the opportunity to shoot one of the homes in Vancouver's Parade of Homes. This is a great 3 story home complete with a 4 hole putting green and an excellent view of the Columbia River. Fun to shoot!

This is a series of head shots for a company called, Phoenix Solutions.They liked the fact that my studio is completely portable so I could come to them, rather than the other way around. With setup, shooting and teardown, I was done in less than an hour so they could get on with their busy day.
This was my first time shooting a condo. Not much different than shooting a house although it does have its own unique challenges. For example, the view out the windows is mostly the building across the courtyard with a few trees between. The agent told me she didn't want the building to show so I left the windows overexposed in order to "blow-out" the view.
I know many of you have already seen this since I posted it to my flickr site in May (http://www.flickr.com/photos/21936839@N03/7243194832), but now there's a story to go with it. I was recently contacted by Mac Group, "a sales and marketing company dedicated to supplying photographers, videographers, educators and students with the world's finest image-making tools". They wanted to use my photo in their Pocket Wizard blog showing how I used Pocket Wizards* to create this shot. Unfortunately, I didn't take a setup shot to show my behind the scenes configuration, so they decided they couldn't use it after all :(

I do quite a bit of product photography but I don't really advertise that I do. In fact one of my clients is a company that designs and manufactures mobile computer networking systems for the military. I'm not even allowed to show those photos. I had to see an endodontist recently and while filling out my new patient paperwork in the waiting area, I couldn't help but overhear that he was in need of a photographer for some shots of his office. Hmmm, opportunity knocks. I handed him my business card as I eased into "the chair" and we chatted as he injected my troubled gums. He took a look at my website while the Novocaine went to work and soon we set a date for the shoot. What timing!
On June 2nd, 2012 Maliah and Jared were married in Vancouver, WA. On June 4th, Jared left for army boot camp in South Carolina. I can't imagine having to be separated for months after 2 days of marriage but they knew what they were getting into. That was the plan. As Jared's wife, the army will move Mali at their expense to wherever he's stationed, within reason, and after boot camp. They're a great looking couple and I'm happy to provide some photos that might help to bridge the gap over the next few months. A long and happy life to you both, M & J!
Kitty contacted me to photograph her, with her 10.5 year old Dobie, Kali. She has plenty of photos of Kali but hardly any of the two of them together. We met on a warm, Spring day at Hoyt Arboretum, a favorite spot for them, and spent some time hiking trails and taking pictures. Kali has been diagnosed with CVI-cervical vertebrae instability and is on enough drugs to help her walk rather than "wobble". She's such a sweet dog and it's tough to watch her struggle and deal with the pain so patiently. Providing these memories for Kitty is what makes what I do so rewarding.
August 1, 1981. I was about to start my sophomore year in college when a brand new concept in television hits the airways - MTV. 24 years later those old music videos that we used to watch on our 13" televisions have become a hit show called "80's Video Dance Attack" in Portland Oregon. It's pretty simple. Put those videos on several huge screens, crank the volume, add a laser light show and the people will dance! Fast forward to 2012 and it's the show's 7th Anniversary. This is the second time I've been hired to photograph for VJ Kittyrox at the Crystal Ballroom and I completely enjoy the experience. Capturing the energy of the crowd and the overall "fun" atmosphere is a challenge that keeps me coming back for more. May your dance floor always be full, Kittyrox!
